Our strategy is smarter than we are

Having a small team, focused strategy, and simple decision-making processes allows us to be nimble and avoid pitfalls that can undermine performance and compromise transparency.

We are invested in companies across the globe, from Japan to Norway to Bermuda.

These are just a handful of the countries we have found investment opportunities in, and we believe this diversity to be one of our greatest strengths.

  • Lagoda is a private wealth manager, investing in both US and Global Markets. The firm was founded with one goal in mind—to create a research-intensive, independent environment where a unique global research strategy could thrive.

Our primary aim is to deliver a product we can be proud of—a portfolio comprising a superior collection of businesses that allow for superior long-term investment performance.

In fact, our name comes from one of the most profitable and longest serving whaling ships in history: The Lagoda.

  • Since its inception, the firm has embarked on a global journey to discover great business models, great owner operators, and great long-term investment opportunities.

In keeping with the origins of our firm’s name, our investment style is inspired by whaling: we search for businesses that we believe our clients can profit from for many years to come.

We are not interested in small, short-lived opportunities.

We know exactly what we look for and are willing to be patient and persistent until we find them.

We are willing to follow opportunities wherever they may be.

  • As an organization, we are deeply research-focused and client-oriented. We value transparency, simplicity, intellectual curiosity, and continuous learning. At Lagoda, our clients become partners in a long-term investment journey. And we consider our portfolio companies as long-term partners as well, as their business journeys continue. We are not interested in short journeys.

To re-use our favorite metaphor: Whaling ships rewarded their crews—from the captain to the cook— through a lay, or a share of the ship’s catch. Everyone shared in the profits or accepted the losses. We will work with the most talented, imaginative, and honest people we can attract, and reward them by sharing our success.
